• In South Africa the “senior prom” is called a matric dance. The nations fragmented socio-economic diversity means that individual communities tend to have their own matric dance traditions. I shot this photographic documentary during the prep (getting ready) part of a matric dance celebration in the Rastafari community in Knysna, on South Africa’s southern coast. I find that when capturing events the most authentic moments often happen in the preparation phase, before faces are painted and facades erected.

  • I shot this photographic documentary series for Cape Etc Magazine. It documents an open day at Killarney Raceway near Cape Town. What’s not too like when local petrolheads bring what they have and slug it out on the tarmac.

  • I shot this photographic documentary series behind the scenes at a Drag contest during a LGBTQ+ festival. I love shooting behind the scenes, often the most raw and honest images are formed before the stage lights are switched on…

  • Film shot for Knysna Association for People with Disabilities. The film features Khanye’s mum talking about her sons dreams and accomplishments.

  • A photographic documentary series about the small rual town of Karatara, situated on South Africa’s southern coastline. I am fascinated by not only the gritty character of this neglected community but also by the eerie architectural repetition of the institution housing that was provided for the original residents.

  • A photographic documentary series I shot for Die Werkswinkel (The Workshop) in Knysna, South Africa. The NGO provides facilities, training and product development to empower disabled people to generate a small income by producing products like cheap coffins, crosses and clothing.

Photographic Documentary

I wish I had the balls to be a documentary photographer on the front lines, the truth is that I don’t think I do. I love photographic documentary though, there is no purer form of photography. I have shot photographic documentaries for a variety of NGO’s, and a few as purely personal projects. I am available for documentary assignments and happy to work within limited budgets if the projects speak to my heart.
